All costs in AUD.
Lease or Hire or Buy
Details
Some tax things means new cars can be leased 'cheaply' in Europe to non-residents. Example. Cheapest lease rates found from renault via autoeurope for a small petral SUV are $80/day for a month, $40/day for a quarter. A bit of hunting (here) and probably down to $30/day.
Compared to normal renting at the same site: $84/day for a week, $63/day for a month, $38/day for a quarter.
What about buying? I don't know the costs. Let's guess. But also you need to find the car (2 days?), sell the car (3 days), buy it (europe bank account required, proof of address required?), get insurances. Call it 5 days stuff around.
Let's assume buy for $15,000 ,sell for 80% of cost. Pay $5/day for insurance. Pay $500 in finance and setup charges. Pay $100/day ($500 for 5 days) in stuff around. Cost is $38/day for a quarter, or - $27/day for 6 months.
Summary
- Less than 3 months: rent at between $84/day for a week to $45/day for 3 months.
- For 3 month to 6 months: lease at between $30/day for a quarter to $24/day for six months
- For 6 months plus: buy at $27/day for six months to $15/day for a year
This equates to:
- One week rental $84/day or $590
- One month rental at $63/day or $1900
- One quarter lease at $28/day or $3350
- One half year lease at $24/day or $4400
